For NAIDOC Week in July 2021, UNAA NSW held multiple activities. There was an engaging NAIDOC Week Event to celebrate the unsung heroes of Wes Trist (President) and Dale Forbes (Secretary) from Mob Sydney Aboriginal Motorcycle Club, and Ken Zulumovski, Founder & Manager of Gamarada Universal Indigenous Resources Pty Ltd. Each person is dedicated to supporting their communities by providing unique support and healing. There was a real spirit of friendship and shared passion at this event.
Other activities included the UNAA NSW volunteers delivering a NAIDOC Week presentation at the UNAA NSW Monthly Meetup; a NAIDOC Week showcase celebrating the Aboriginal land our members and supporters live on; and a screening of the critically acclaimed documentary In My Blood It Runs.
Last year for UN Day, UNAA (NSW) held a ‘United Nations Day ~ Peace People Planet’ initiative calling upon schools in NSW to observe the day on Friday, 22 October (as 24 October is a Sunday) by wearing ‘Blue’ among other activities to highlight the work of the UN and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. 26 schools registered their interest to be part of the iniative. Schools held blue mufti days, projects asking students to write actions they can take to make a difference, a water filter project, introducing of SDGs in lessons, a SDG quiz in science lessons, and more. We are very impressed and moved by the wonderful involvement from these schools.

UN International Day of Human Rights, 2021. As the United Nations marks its 73rd Anniversary, this event presented Australia’s most important promoters and advocates of Human Rights. You can hear the unique perspectives of change makers across a wide-cross section of our Australian community, from athletes, entrepreneurs, refugees, human rights and justice advocates and politicians. These are people who aspire to make a real difference, a positive impact and in the process inspire others.
The aim is to bring together these voices to shed light on the complexities and nuances that surround Human Rights, raise awareness of those challenges and also celebrate the important, meaningful achievements that have been made. These universal rights are inherent to us all, regardless of nationality, gender, ethnic origin, colour, religion or any other status … Rights that we must have simply because we exist as human beings.
The event, hosted by UNAA (NSW), in partnership with the Centre for Social Justice and Inclusion at UTS, and Affinity Intercultural Foundation, is a series of short, impactful talks under four themes: Our common Humanity; The impact of COVID on Human Rights; Shaping the future of Human Rights; and Human Rights and Sports.

In October 2019, we hosted our annual UN Gala Dinner, a formal, fun, and networking event to support a good cause. Organised by VP programs Ms Andrea Spencer-Cooke, the Gala Dinner was held at the NSW Parliament House with this year’s Honour being awarded to Reconciliation Australia in recognition of their commitment to promoting and facilitating respect, trust, and positive relationships between the wider Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
